Martin Luther King Day, January 15, 2017. The flagship Writers Resist event was first held. It was co-sponsored by PEN America. Over 100 events were held around the world. They were in response to the 2016 election and rise of nationalism.
A group of local writers, musicians, and activists joined in the event. Under the banner Hudson Valley Writers Resist, they celebrated the power of words, compassion, equality, free speech, and democracy. Funds were raised for the New York Civil Liberties Union, Riverkeeper, and Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley. This song by Simi Stone with David Baron really touched me, so I used a portion of it to highlight the day.
I’ve worked as a videographer for podcasts, poets, writers, musicians, actors and performance artists, including Woodstock Bookfest. You can do a lot with a single camera and an H4 recorder. This pro bono was my way to #Resist.
